About me
|
I'm currently living in Helsinki, Finland, where I am employed as a
postdoctoral researcher at the
University
of Helsinki's Department of Digital Humanities.
|
|
Before, I did my PhD in Computer Science at the University of Leipzig, Germany and
was member of the Natural
Language Processing Group there. In my dissertation, I
explore a novel method of unsupervised learning of language morphology based on
a little-known linguistic theory, that is very different from the "mainstream"
views on morphology.

My favourite part of the work in academia is teaching. I have taught courses
about NLP and text mining, as well as Algorithms and Data Structures.
|
|
I was born and grew up in the lovely Wrocław in southwestern Poland.

You may be confused about whether my first name is Maciej or Maciek. The
fact that J and K are next to each other on the keyboard does not make it
easier. Here's the thing: Maciej is the formal and official variant of the
name, whereas Maciek is more informal (more exactly, a
diminutive). Sort of like William
and Bill. The ci digraph is pronounced /t͡ɕ/, similarly to ch in English
cheese.

One of my hobbies is linguistics and learning languages. Besides my native
Polish, I am fluent in English and German, have some command of Finnish,
Swedish, Dutch and Russian and have unsuccessfully attempted to learn
Lithuanian multiple times. Feel free to email me in any of those languages
(including Lithuanian, but it might take longer for me to answer).

I play electric bass and used to play it for
Linie 7ieben. You can see music videos featuring me
here and
here (I used to look
quite differently back then). I also play on their studio album
"Lauter".

I am a practicing Christian.
